Frequently Asked Questions on Mastectomy Bras

Mastectomy Bras
How do I determine my Bra Size?
Measure lightly around the body directly underneath the breast. Add 4 or 5 inches to determine the bra size.

Obtain measurement around the chest at the fullest part of the bust-line (nipple). Difference between measurement taken from the fullest part & bra size determines the cup size.

If the body''s circumference measures 40 inches or more, add 1-2 inches to get even number. The larger the measurement, the fewer additional inches needs to be added.

What is a Mastectomy Bra?
A mastectomy bra is a specially designed bra for use with breast prosthesis forms. It is made with a specially designed pocket in each cup. The silicone breast form is slipped inside the pocket, where it is held firmly in place against the body for a natural recreation of symmetry.
What is the significance of choosing a Mastectomy Bra?
With a wide variety of styles, from elegant to sports bras, mastectomy bras are ideal for those patients who have undergone a mastectomy on one or both breasts, but chose not to have their breasts reconstructed. Designed especially for this purpose, a mastectomy bra may also be made with features similar to traditional bras, such as both front or back hook closures and a choice of satin, lace, or cotton.
How do I choose the best Mastectomy Bra?
A mastectomy bra should be made of soft material and be comfortable to wear, it should not require regular adjustment, be too tight or too loose.
What are different types of Mastectomy Bras?
  • Silicone Bra:
    - Silicone Bra often provides the wearer with a breast lift, and can be used as push-up bras. Some silicone bras resemble cloth bras and are available in various shades. Most gel bras use silicone gel, though a few use other materials. A bra with air pillow or water-filled inserts may give results that are similar to a gel bra.
  • Casual T-Shirt Mastectomy Bra:
    - It is made from comfortable spacer fabric and soft molded cups, providing maximum stretch and moldability. One of the best features of this pocketed bra are the convertible straps that can be worn in a traditional, criss-cross, or halter style.
  • Lace Front Mastectomy Bra:
    - It is made from the softest, most comfortable microfiber base fabric. This fiber-filled bra offers stretch lace top cups and lace strap extensions. It is soft, comfortable and pretty and has cotton or spandex pockets that secretly hold breast forms in place and offer a gentle support that makes them easy to wear.
  • Leisure Bra:
    - It is made with soft cotton-stretch fabric and offers coverage and support without causing irritation. This comfortable bra is perfect for relaxation and casual leisure activities. It has cotton and spandex pockets that secretly hold breast forms in place and offer a gentle support that makes them easy to wear.
What is the use of a Post Surgery Bra?
The Post Surgery Bra is designed for women to wear after breast or chest surgery. It is made of 92 percent high grade cotton which makes it breathable for all types of climate and eight-percent spandex jersey provides easy dressing.
What are Bra Inserts?
Some women choose to amplify the overall effect by inserting additional padding into the bottom or sides of the bra. Though a bra may be made with the liquid already inside, modern gel inserts may also be added to an otherwise waterless bra.
What to expect at a Post Mastectomy Fitting?
Mastectomy fittings normally take place after the patient has completely healed from her surgery, approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Tenderness and tissue changes may occur 6 months or more following surgery.

At the fitting, you will be seen by a certified post-mastectomy fitter. They are trained to fit bras and prostheses, know which products are right for the type of surgery you had, and can handle any special circumstances you may have.

Your fitting will be done in a private, comfortable fitting room. Your fitter will first check the mastectomy site to be sure there is not any drainage or open wounds.
